I ask my Godbrothers; what Kind of Guru are you? This longstanding argument should not be whether we can be guru’s or not, but what kind of guru’s can we be? Srila Prabhupada told us to be guru’s many times, so we should become guru’s. We can and should be instructing guru’s and help others advance in Krsna Consciousness.

Often enough we hear the question “How do you know Srila Prabhupada has accepted you as a disciple?” when we preach that Srila Prabhupada is the current, living initiating (diksa) guru for the Hare Krishna movement. The question stems from a misunderstanding of the role and nature of the spiritual master. The spiritual master’s purpose is to guide society to surrender to Lord Krishna through devotional service; his instructions are centered around that purpose. The bona fide spiritual master gives appropriate instructions which the entire world can take advantage of.

The standard method of receiving Vedic knowledge is through the chain of disciplic succession. This is a tradition of hearing. In this age of Kali-yuga, with the common man’s memory being very weak, this hearing is still there but in the form of books.

“I am the spiritual master of this institution, and all the members of the society, they’re supposed to be my disciples. They follow the rules and regulations which I ask them to follow, and they are initiated by me spiritually.” (Srila Prabhupada radio interview, 12 march 1968, San Francisco)
The concept of a disciple is very simple: A disciple is one who follows discipline. And whoever is giving that discipline, that is who the student is a disciple of. In the International Society For Krsna Consciousness, founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, its members are required to follow a specific discipline. This discipline is essential to ones advancement in Krsna Consciousness. Srila Prabhupada wrote dozens of transcendental books which would act as the basis of the movement. The discipline required of every member to follow is given in these foundational books.
